The first time I heard Whitney Houston’s beautiful rendition of ‘I Didn’t Know My Own Strength’, I had to pause and think. Suddenly, I was overcome with tears. It was like a bullet going through my spine. I had not thought about the tremendous resource I had and was taking for granted. When I heard the song I was moved. “I wasn’t built to break /I didn’t know my own strength”, Whitney sang. I did not break-- I made it. I just did not know my own strengths or the strengths God had blessed me with. As I listened to this song something deep within me stirred. I quickly took out a sheet of paper and started looking at what my strengths were. I was amazed to see the gifts of strengths that I had. This catapulted me to a new horizon as I started to realize that I did not have to fear unknown situations, that I was fully loaded, fully equipped for battle and that the impossible and possible both lie in the strengths and determination that God had given. My spirit was born free.

Many of us go through life never knowing what our strengths are, even worse some of us have no idea what our weaknesses/limitations are either. When we go on not knowing what our strengths are, they will soon become weaknesses and our weakness will begin to control us. But taking the time to explore the two will reveal much to us; we find that the things we once thought were limitations/weaknesses can now be used in our favour.

We need to teach ourselves to embrace both strengths and weaknesses. Clearly, we need to embrace our weaknesses and not be embarrassed by them. In the process, when we accept simultaneously our strengths and weaknesses, we will move into a whole new realm of consciousness with the capacity for helping others to become aware of their balanced potential. Know your strengths, weaknesses and powers of transcendence!
